Seeing all persons, with or without disabilities, as whole and deserving of respect. Giving all persons, with or without disabilities, as much opportunity as possible to make choices in their own lives. Including all persons, with or without disabilities, in our communities. When someone cannot speak, take the time to listen to their actions and expressions or their alternative communication system. Assume that all people, with or without disabilities, are capable. Support families who want to care for their family members with disabilities. Support people with disabilities who want to live on their own. Open nursing homes, group homes, institutions and state hospitals to the light of day, so families and community can make unannounced visits to check on care and keep loved ones safe. End shackling and handcuffing of persons with developmental disabilities. Have trained quality assurance teams who are separate from the institutions and government agencies providing services interview the person with the disability, family, friends, staff and other care providers at least once a year and whenever there is a concern of well-being. Report the findings to the team of interviewees so problems can be solved and any abuse can be stopped. End the threatening of family and friends trying to protect persons with disabilities in institutions. Stop taking visitation away from those who report neglect or abuse. End the isolation of persons with disabilities and keep them safe. Replace decisions about care by corporate and government entities with loving care from families and community members who give the individuals with disabilities the opportunity to make decisions about their own lives.
